3 ultimate summer road trips in Australia

Australia
is enormous. The whole mainland and then some (don't forget Tasmania) is ripe with epic road trips waiting to happen. And even though it was an incredibly difficult feat to condense what is a litany of road trip possibilities down to a mere top three, we did it. Summer road trips here we come.

But wait, isn't it winter? Not down in Australia it's not. If you're south of the equator on locum tenens assignment you can already feel the summer vibes, can't you?

The Coral Coast, Western Australia

Where the reddest of outback reds meet the bluest of ocean blues, this is the Coral Coast. Start in Perth. End in Exmouth. The route is simple enough but the landscape is complex. There are Pinnacles to explore (brilliant limestone formations) and Kalbarri wildflowers to witness (a stunning array of flora interspersed throughout Kalbarri National Park). Set aside a good ten days so you won't feel rushed at each destination.

The east coast of Tasmania

Tasmania is sometimes overlooked when Australia gets brought up. Most think of the outback or the Sydney Opera House or even the Great Barrier Reef. Still, Tassie has spectacular sights just the same. And where can you find most of them? Along the east coast of course.

You'll begin in Hobart and finish along the Bay of Fires (or vice versa). What makes this road trip so great? Maria Island, the Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay to name a few.

Gibb River Road, Western Australia

It wasn't our intention to list two Western Australia road trips; it just kind of happened that way. The Gibb River Road is a heckuva backcountry trip to take – one for the books in fact. You can start in Derby and end in Wyndham.

410 miles of outback countryside awaits. Some highlights along the way include Windjana Gorge National Park, Manning Gorge and El Questro Wilderness Park. Be sure you take a four-wheel drive vehicle for this journey.
