The City of Roses by any other name would be 'Beervana'

Over 40 breweries call Portland, Oregon home—that's more than any other metropolis in the world. It's no surprise the City of Roses goes by another name, Beervana, and yes, the brew smells (and tastes) sweet. Step into a Portland pub and you'll find more than pilsners and porters, there are barley wines, imperial stouts, double IPAs, barrel-aged strong ales, farmhouse saisons…get the picture?

You'll learn quickly that the locals here love the famous beer culture. They must since most are crafters and even more are partakers. Some breweries are known nationwide, like Pyramid and Rogue Ales. Others have a cult following like Hair of the Dog Brewery. And still others even have their own brewpub: Widmer Brothers. If you're up for exploring the ins and outs of beer making then take a Widmer tour which ends with lunch in their Gasthaus Pub.

Brand new to town? Then ride the Portland BrewBus—it gives you citywide views with 20 microbrewery stops in between. Serious beer enthusiasts will want to try one of the city's many nanobreweries (licensed breweries that put out only 30 gallons of lovingly crafted beer at a time).

Portland is clearly a hopping place but there's more to it than beer. Foodies flock here and outdoor adventurers call it paradise—find your niche
