Where to go and what to do in the Australian Alps

You’ve heard of the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, right? And the Southern Alps in New Zealand? How about the Australian Alps? These beauties decorate quite a large portion of southeastern Australia. The tallest of peaks is Mount Kosciuszko. It reaches 7,310 feet in the air and is part of the Seven Summits that many climbers seek to conquer. But we’re not here to talk about peak bagging. We’re here to highlight top destinations in the Australian Alps. Are you on locum tenens assignment in Australia? Check these places out.

Explore the Australian Alps Walking Track

This trail – or “track” we should say – winds its way through a significant amount of jaw-dropping countryside. Hike the 403-mile-long track in its entirety or break it up into smaller sections to enjoy. Best time to go is from November to April. And one of the prettiest parts of the track is from Walhalla to Mount Hotham.

Visit Namadgi National Park

This place has a very interesting name with an even more interesting landscape (Namadgi is the Aboriginal name for the mountains southwest of Canberra). Bushland and craggy granite outcrops dominate the horizon in Namadgi National Park. We recommend that you head to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve to experience an Aboriginal site that’s 21,000 years old.

Travel the Great Alpine Road

What’s so great about this alpine road? Well it’s a three-day drive from Melbourne to Bairnsdale where historic Australian towns and wineries dot the landscape, and numerous national parks with incredibly distinct, diverse landscapes are ripe for exploring. Go to Danny’s Lookout at Mount Feathertop to catch some pretty unforgettable and unimaginable views.
