A scenic train ride or an hour and a half drive to New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington. This community has 3 forest parks, a huge coastline (complete with lighthouses) and the Classic NZ Wine Trail passing right through. Head up to the Waiohine Gorge (35 minutes) at the foot of the Tararuas and a swinging bridge is your gateway to hiking (aka tramping) into the ranges. Head out to Cape Palliser on the coast, and you will pass through the tiny fishing village of Ngawi where you will see a colorful array of old bulldozers and tractors parked on the beach.
