Locum 101: Australia's public transportation system

While you'll have a car during your locum tenens assignment in Australia, it doesn't hurt to familiarize yourself with the country's public transportation system.

In most of Australia's major cities, you will find buses and taxicabs. Rail services, on the other hand, are a little more complicated. And if you expect to hop on a traditional subway you're out of luck—although the cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth do have rail systems that partially travel along underground tracks.

Australia's large railway network travels between cities and states. Taking a train can be more economical, and fortunately, there are several of these options available throughout the country. If you hop aboard the Indian Pacific, you can travel between Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, while The Ghan connects, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Alice Springs.

In addition, Australia's public transportation options extend to the nation's waterways. The CityCat and CityFerry are two of the watercrafts that people can step aboard in Brisbane.
