Discover treasures at New Zealand's historic Arrowtown

Many individuals who venture to New Zealand on locum assignment may spend the first few weeks exploring the country, savoring the seascapes and mingling with locals to discover its hidden treasures. One secret that natives may clue you in on is the historic Arrowtown.

The small community initially evolved in the 1860s as a result of a frantic gold rush. After explorers discovered the mineral-rich district in 1861, they tried their best to keep it secret, but, by the end of the following year, about 1,500 miners had camped along the river to collect roughly 12,000 ounces of gold.

It was not until the 1950s that the community became a popular tourist attraction. To uphold this reputation, New Zealand residents began to restore the historic cottages and build vacation homes in the area. With a present population of about 2,000 residents, the small-town vibe combined with the laid-back atmosphere of the country makes visiting tourists feel right at home.

To fully immerse yourself into Arrowtown, consider taking a carriage tour of the region. Aligned with the quaint, historic charm of the downtown district, an old-fashioned horse-drawn buggy is an ideal mode of travel to send you back in time to the exciting period of the gold rush.
