Learn all about New Zealand heritage at Te Papa

With a name that means "Our Place" in Maori, Wellington's Te Papa is arguably the greatest historical and interactive museum in the country, offering an in-depth look into the personal narratives of the history of New Zealand. When you take a locum tenens assignment in the country, this place is the perfect primer for understanding the eclectic culture of the Land of the Long White Cloud.

The OurSpace exhibit, one of the permanent displays in the museum, showcases a 46-foot (14-meter) satellite map of New Zealand, a collage wall and interactive rides that capture the beloved heritage of the country. When you step onto the floor, your footsteps trigger sensors that project an array of images onto large display screens. Each "hot spot" reveals fragments of the Kiwi culture.

Be sure to peruse the massive touch-screen wall, too, that acts as a digital historical archive, where you choose which photographs, news stories and works of art are displayed simultaneously.
