Experience the blend of native tradition and modern sport in the Tiwi Islands

The Tiwi Islands in Australia's Northern Territory are a great place for locum tenens to experience different sides of the country's culture, ranging from aboriginal traditions to modern sports.

Located north of Darwin at the juncture of the Arafura and Timor Seas, the Tiwi Islands cover more than 3,212 square miles of scenic tropical terrain. They have been inhabited by native groups for 7,000 years, and their aboriginal traditions have remained strong to this day.

During a visit to this group of isles, travelers can explore native heritage by learning about indigenous art. They may visit one of several design centers in the islands as well as a group of native women who have operated a fabric and clothing business since 1969.

On the other end of the cultural spectrum, the Tiwi Islands are a major center for Australian rules football. The region has its own local league for the sport dating back to 1969, and more than a third of the local population participates. Each year, the grand final is seen by as many as 3,000 spectators and fans.
