Locum 101: Australian slang and idioms (for the Yanks)

Locum tenens may not be completely savvy to the slang down under—especially when a lot of the Aussie idioms known in western culture have been learned through movies and TV shows. So here is a crash course in both some well-known sayings and some of the lesser known.

You have no doubt heard that a barbecue is a barbie, and that a man is a bloke, but did you know that chook is another way of saying chicken? If you are asked to step onto a footpath, there's no need to be confused, since this is just another way of saying sidewalk. When someone offers you lollies or lolly water, they're merely offering sweets and a soft drink.

Rather than say hello, you may receive more responses if you say g'day, Australia's universal greeting. If someone with whom you are conversing says she'll be right, they are simply telling you that there is no problem and you should not worry. So, have no worries when you travel down under but take time to learn some Aussie slang.
