New Zealand breeds Kiwi style-setters

Each nation creates, follows and dismisses certain trends in the world of fashion. Whether it's ponchos, over-sized sweaters, fanny packs or mixing patterns, the clothing and accessories of New Zealand pose a certain style all their own. When you take a locum assignment near the style capital of the country, Wellington, you won't be able to resist trying out the eclectic, edgy fashion pointers from the trendy Kiwis.

The winter New Zealand fashion week event showcased the latest patterns, fabrics and silhouettes from some of the hottest rising designers in the country. Miranda Brown, well-known for her commitment to consciously made clothing, presented styles with cut-out details, asymmetric lines and elaborate draping, offset by a mainly monochromatic canvas.

Another prominent designer, who isn't afraid to combine styles, is Katie-Maree Cole. Mixing country-prairie with grunge-city styles at the fashion event, the Kiwi favorite created effortless looks that provided instant wardrobe inspiration.

While runway styles look great on the catwalk, an even better place to look for fashion trends is on the city streets. Places like music festivals or nightclubs and lounges in Wellington are ideal locations to scope out the styles of everyday Kiwis. The temperate climate of the country allows city walkers to wear virtually anything they want every day—a lightweight scarf, a long flowy skirt, your favorite broken-in jeans or a day dress can all be appropriate for a day out in Wellington.
