Learn about New Zealand's relationship with Antarctica

You know to expect cooler weather when you're on locum assignment in New Zealand this August. However, you can expect things to get even chillier in the city of Christchurch when the South Island's largest metropolis celebrates the Antarctic Festival.

This annual event celebrates New Zealand’s connection to Antarctica. While this frigid continent at the bottom of the world doesn't have a permanent population or much culture, you're sure to find elements of the upcoming festival both fascinating and fun.

If you're concerned about the well being of the planet, then you'll want to attend, or even participate in the international discussions that the festival will host on topics such as climate change and Antarctic research.

If you have children, then they too can find something to enjoy at the festival. The event will feature a Winter Garden, which is said to be the next best thing to actually visiting Antarctica. Christchurch is the ideal setting for this festival as the city is the starting point for many Antarctic expeditions.
