Discovering hidden Australian towns off the beaten path

Sometimes the best adventures happen in the most unexpected places. While Australia has its known landmarks and physical features, it's the country's quaint villages that offer a unique experience to locum tenens on assignment here.

Mission Beach—which is hidden in a lush rainforest off of the Bruce Highway—offers you pristine beaches, offshore islands and hiking trails that no one should miss out on experiencing firsthand. And if you're looking for something a bit more extreme, nearby Tully River has whitewater rafting that will give you the opportunity to tackle 45 different rapids—some of which are classified as Grade 4.

To gain another perspective, locum tenens will want to visit Coober Pedy. This unique mining town was built entirely underground, making it the biggest subterranean town in Australia.

The locals created the underground area to complement the opal mining that takes place there, making Coober Pedy the self-proclaimed opal capital of the world. Visit in April and you'll be able to take part in the annual gem trade show that takes place over the Easter holiday weekend.
