Mount Kosciuszko – Australia's tallest peak

Whether Denali, Elbrus or Kilimanjaro, tackling the highest peak around is a common challenge for adventurous, outdoorsy types. One of the great things about a locum tenens assignment in Australia is the proximity to Mount Kosciuszko, the perfect introductory peak for aspiring mountaineers.

The top of Australia

Topping out at an elevation of 7,300 feet, the summit of Mount Kosciuszko is the highest point in Australia, edging out nearby Mount Townsend by a mere 400 feet. The summit is accessible year-round. And while no mountaineering expedition should be taken lightly and without proper preparation, Kosciuszko is an entirely attainable summit.

Kosciuszko National Park, located roughly halfway between Melbourne and Canberra, is home to each of the 10 highest peaks on the Australian continent. The truly adventurous can summit all 10 climbs during a two- to four-day excursion. However, Kosciuszko itself can be conquered in a day.

More than a climb

The peak is accessible from either Thredbo or Charlotte Pass. If you can juggle the drop-off and pick-up logistics, you can do a traverse rather than hike in and out on the same trail. Aussie10.com recommends setting out from Charlotte Pass in order to finish the trip off with a downhill trek to Thredbo. Regardless of which route you take, the park has a lot to offer in addition to Kosciuszko.

The park service provides travel recommendations based on the season, and visitors should plan accordingly. Spring is a good time for off-trail hiking and exploration. There are summer programs on conservation and Aboriginal heritage offered through the Kosciuszko Educational Centre. The park is also a popular destination for mountain bikers, and Kosciuszko climbers can expect to see cross-country skiers on the trails in the winter.

It might be the first of your continental peaks, or maybe it's the last. Doesn't matter. If your international locum tenens assignment takes you anywhere near Victoria or New South Wales, consider a climb up Mount Kosciuszko.
