Where should you plan your next big fishing trip? Ontario, of course.

Think up all the great places to fish the world over. We bet you'll list fantastical places like Alaska. But the Last Frontier isn't the only place you can find some of the best freshwater fishing. Look farther east to Canada for that, too – specifically Ontario.

If you plan to be anywhere near this province on locum tenens assignment then bring along your trusty fishing rod and your best lures. Oh, and a friend – because you'll need someone to bear witness as you catch some of the finest fish you've ever caught in your entire life. Plus, you'll want to share in the awesome beauty that is the Ontario countryside.

Approximately 250,000 lakes are scattered throughout this province. Close to 62,000 miles of rivers, too. That makes for a lot of fishing. Here are three lakes to check out while in the Great White North.

Lake Simcoe

Though notable for ice fishing, Lake Simcoe – near Georgina – can be fished year-round for the likes of lake trout, perch, pike and whitefish. It's been said that it has some top-notch smallmouth bass swimming in its depths, too. Come during winter, spring, summer or fall, there's never a bad time.

Lake Ontario (of course)

It goes without saying that you should stop by Lake Ontario. Salmon fishing is second to none here (except maybe to British Columbia but we're talking Ontario now). You can also find trophy walleye in droves in the Bay of Quinte.

Lake Nipigon

You're going to want to come to Lake Nipigon for all your brook and lake trout fishing, especially during spring and fall. With 1,872 square miles to fish, this lake is sometimes called the sixth Great Lake.
