Discover one of the world's most scenic coastal drives – the Great Ocean Road

If we were to list off all the spectacular coastal drives the world over we'd name off ones like California's Highway 1 and the Road to Hana in Hawaii. Though, in listing these stunning roadways we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. It certainly makes the list, if not tops it. It's for views like the Twelve Apostles which crown the shoreline of course (there are only eight apostles left due to erosion). But it's also because of the vineyards and history scattered throughout. Yep, this part of Australia is vibrant and alive.

In Australia on locum tenens assignment? You won't want to miss this drive.

Built just after World War I and dedicated to soldiers, the Great Ocean Road serves not only as a memorial but also as a proud connection between the rugged west coast of Victoria and the rest of Australia. Prior to the Great Ocean Road, this cross-section of land was only accessible by sea or a rough series of trails.

Today, you can rent a car and travel down this most iconic road completely unencumbered. You'll be met with towering sea rocks, moody yet bright waterfalls and quaint and artsy, surf towns – Torquay being one of them. In fact, start your trip here. This place is notoriously known as a prime surf capital around the world. It's home to Bells Beach after all (some of the world's best surfers gather here).

What else is notable about this drive you ask? Well, you can end it with Cape Otway, which is conveniently the southernmost point of the Great Ocean Road. You'll be greeted with stunning rainforest and one of Australia's oldest lighthouses. We also recommend on your way from Torquay to Cape Otway that you stop off at Bellbrae Estate to get a taste of coastal wine unlike any other.
