Escape into the fall colors of Colorado

Fall is fast approaching. Where are you planning to experience the autumn colors and the changing of the seasons? If you're considering a U.S. locum tenens assignment and love fall foliage, may we suggest the mountain passes of Colorado?

The Centennial State

Colorado certainly isn't short on stunning, outdoor appeal. Nearby assignments open up opportunities to explore Telluride, Crested Butte, Aspen and more. For many, the Colorado mountains might seem like a winter-only ski destination, but the entire region offers distinct, year-round seasonal attractions.

Fodor's includes Aspen among their 10 best fall getaway destinations. Perhaps that's not so surprising, as the name Aspen conjures images of wooded hills and rugged mountain slopes.

In mid-September, alpine breezes rustle leaves as they start their inexorable turn from green, through yellow to burnished gold. Biking or driving mountain roads like the San Juan Skyway and southern Colorado's La Veta Pass are perfect for photographers or outdoor adventurers ziplining through the Aspen treetops.

While it's a challenge to focus on just one Colorado autumn venue, Three Island Lake Loop provides visitors with an idyllic opportunity to hike among the falling leaves.

The Mount Zirkel Wilderness

Located near Steamboat Springs in north central Colorado, Mount Zirkel Wilderness is home to nearly 170 miles of trails. The area is one of the Colorado Tourism Office's 10 must-see locations, and hiking the Three Island Lake trail is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of fall.

The seven-mile hike passes through aspen groves, climbing up to a view over the quiet waters of Three Island Lake. The trek is one of the most beautiful in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness at any time of year, but the fleeting fall colors are truly special.
