Explore the collection of the Auckland Art Gallery

In recent years, New Zealand has become a major hub of culture for the Pacific Rim, and locum tenens can experience one aspect of this culture by visiting the Auckland Art Gallery, the country's largest collection of local and international art.

The gallery dates back to 1888, when local authorities created a museum thanks to bequests from two prominent members of the Auckland community. In the years since, the attraction has expanded to include another building across the street.

Visitors to the museum can enjoy a diverse range of art, with more than 15,000 individual works in the gallery's collection. While the facility initially focused on European paintings, it has since diversified its holdings, growing to include impressive collections of New Zealand, Pacific and contemporary art.

Some prominent Kiwi artists whose work can be seen at the Auckland Art Gallery include Gretchen Albrecht, Marti Friedlander, C.F. Goldie, Alfred Henry O'Keeffe, Frances Hodgkins, Gottfruit Lindauer and Colin McCahon.

In addition to its many exhibit rooms, the gallery also features a library and a learning center, allowing guests to delve deeper into the exciting world of art.
