Welcome to Wollongong, gateway to the South Coast

As the gateway to the South Coast of New South Wales, Wollongong receives thousands of visitors crossing back and forth over its border each year. Considered one of the most livable regional cities, "the Gong" is more than just a pitstop on a road trip through the Land Down Under. When you take a medical job in Australia, you should head to this adventurous city for more than just a brief bite to eat or stop to stretch your legs before arriving at the South Coast.

As the city skirts the coast of Australia, just outside Sydney, your chance for scenic viewing abounds from one edge of town to the other. One of the best ways to view the horizon along the Tasman Sea is on bike, which allows you to gaze upon stunning beachfront scenery along more than 37 miles (60 km) of bike paths. You'll not only get an extensive tour of the city, you'll get quite the workout, too.

The headlands of Wollongong produce colossal waves that have enticed hundreds of skilled surfers to its coastline over the years, and it can be a great place to try and successfully stand on your board for the first time. From Coalcliff and Woonona to Bellambi and Coledale, you won't have a hard time finding a nice strip of sand to settle down on in the Wollongong area.
