Adventure awaits visitors to Waiheke

There’s the North Island, the South Island, and then there are several smaller landmasses that make up New Zealand, including Waiheke Island.

This area, which is located about 10 miles from Auckland, is small in size, but also the third most populated island after North and South. So what’s the appeal of this Hauraki Gulf destination and why should you visit during your locum assignment?

From forests and beaches to farms and vineyards, Waiheke has much to offer. Pick up a bow and arrow at the Wild on Waiheke multi-activity venue and try your hand at archery. Test your balance while standing and rowing on a paddle board, or, simply sit and set out on a kayak adventure.

For some creative culture, visit the Connells Bay Sculpture Park, where you’ll see Vanish, an installation made up of 160 stoneware men. Each figure is identical, except for the color of the jumpsuit they are wearing. Also on the island, you’ll find Whittaker’s Musical Museum, home to examples of classic instruments—some of which date back as far as the 1500s.

A great way to get to know all the island has to offer is to take a tour on land, sea or air. Hop aboard the Fullers Explorer Tour for scenic views of Waiheke’s bays, or, take off from the island’s airfield to get a full scope from high in the sky.
