Be on the lookout for the beautiful rainbow lorikeet

From the koala to the kangaroo, Australia has a reputation for being home to some of the world’s most unique animals, and the rainbow lorikeet proves that point. During your locum assignment Down Under, you’ll want to keep your eye out for this multicolored bird.

Each part of the rainbow lorikeet's body is a different color. Based on its backside, this living work of art may appear to be emerald green, but that’s simply not the case. The lorikeet’s head and lower body tends to be a deep shade of blue, while the breast is a mix of vibrant orange and yellow feathers.

The average lorikeet is around 27.94 centimeters (11 inches) in length and weighs anywhere between 120-140 grams (4.2-5 ounces). You can take your chances trying to catch a glimpse of these tiny flying rainbows in the Northern and Eastern coasts of Australia. In New Zealand, the rainbow lorikeet is found in the Auckland area.
