Birdwatchers should flock to Kakadu National Park

Australia’s Kakadu National Park covers a lot of ground; it’s about half the size of Switzerland. So, it can’t hurt to know a little about the different areas that make up this land in the country’s Northern Territory—especially if you plan on visiting during your locum assignment.

Among Kakadu’s regions is the South Alligator area. This part of the national park is near the South Alligator River and it's also where you'll find the Mamukala wetlands. Birdwatchers will be especially interested in this area of Kakadu, because it’s home to many different species. During the dry season that takes place between September and October, thousands of birds flock to this region.

Inside the observation platform at the wetlands, you can watch birds congregate and learn how the seasons affect this area through murals and paintings.

When you visit this region, you can also enjoy the 3.6-kilometer Gu-ngarre walk, which begins at a large banyan fig tree and takes you through a monsoon forest and woodland. If you're looking to relax and simply appreciate the natural beauty around you, then visit the South Alligator River picnic area.
