Christchurch officials envision a greener city

Christchurch is looking to the future as they rebuild after a series of earthquakes and aftershocks ripped through the town in 2010 and 2011. So, if you're on locum assignment in New Zealand then you have the unique chance to see a city being redesigned.

According to the city's website, while parts of Christchurch are cordoned off to ensure people's safety, these areas grow smaller with each passing day. Locum doctors who plan to visit some of this city's sites may have an interest in learning that Christchurch officials are using their need to rebuild as an opportunity to reinvent the area, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The city officials of Christchurch envision more low-rise buildings to reduce some of the concern that would accompany a future earthquake, according to the news source. In fact, Bob Parker, the city's mayor, has described the new vision for Christchurch as a "low-rise city in the garden."

The future of Christchurch may include a new downtown area, with plenty of green space to ensure an environmentally friendly city, the news outlet stated. Better bike paths and a light rail would allow residents to live more sustainable lives.
