Dive into Australian waters and explore the HMAS Perth

Since 2001, Western Australia has been a prime spot for diving adventures thanks to one particular scuttling: the HMAS Perth. Originally a guided missile destroyer of the Royal Australian Navy, the vessel received two major awards from the U.S. secretary of the Navy: Meritorious Service and Exceptionally Meritorious Service. When you take a medical job in Australia, you can explore this historic watercraft and scuba dive near the reef surrounding it, situated right off Seal Island.

At 5,346 tons (4,850 tonnes) and about 435 feet (133 m), this enormous underwater structure became home to an abundance of sea life after it was deliberately sunk in the King George Sound. With only the mast poking above the surface of the ocean, the ship has a wealth of mystery waiting to be explored.

A dive trail helps you navigate your way to each memorable landmark on the vessel and identifies the number of different species, including the sea sponge, oyster, doughboy scallop, mussel and "sea squirt," or ascidian, to name a few.
