Explore the high country of Canterbury, New Zealand

Canterbury, the largest region in New Zealand, boasts a big country landscape that features more diversity in terrain than virtually any other area in the nation. The towering Southern Alps, braided river valleys, endless stretches of plains and waves of the Pacific Ocean are only some of the sights you'll see when you take a medical job in New Zealand. You can tramp through trails, ride on horseback along rugged terrain or fish along the banks of the braided rivers in Lake Coleridge and feel like a local living off the land of Aotearoa.

As the most frequented fishing spot in North Canterbury, Lake Coleridge's impressive population of aquatic species is no surprise. Landlocked chinook salmon fill the waters in this area, as do brown and rainbow trout. After you've caught your fair share you can check out the spectacular braided rivers, including the Rakaia, which is the best place for salmon fishing in the whole country.

The river provides hundreds of ideal spots for you to settle in for the afternoon and wait for your catch of the day – some fishermen have caught salmon as large as 30 pounds in these waters.
