Find some of the world's clearest water at Blue Lake in New Zealand

While much of New Zealand is visually stunning, for a real treat during your locum assignment, make a visit to Blue Lake.

On New Zealand’s South Island, you'll find what researchers from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research believe to be the clearest freshwater lake ever reported. This body of water is considered to have even greater visibility than Te Waikoropupu Springs, which is also located
on the island and has a reputation for its clear water.

When you visit Blue Lake, you'll see clear water with blue-violet hues. This unique supply of freshwater comes from nearby glacial Lake Constance. Blue Lake’s optical clarity is due to the fact that landslide debris between the two bodies of water acts as a dam that filters out all suspended particles from Lake Constance.

The water’s clarity will be monitored over the next few years to ensure that Blue Lake remains the unique natural attraction it is today. But because nature is unpredictable, you'll want to make sure and visit the lake sooner rather than later.
