Follow Australia's artistic history at the Newcastle Region Art Gallery

Have an appreciation for the arts? Then check out some of Australia’s finest on a visit to the Newcastle Region Art Gallery during your locum assignment.

The gallery in New South Wales has been a cultural destination since 1977 and you’ll find more than 5,000 works in its permanent collection. Each of these pieces—from colonial times to the present—helps provide an overview of Australia’s art history.

Several artistic mediums are represented at the gallery, from paintings and drawings to ceramics and prints. As you pass through this cultural attraction, you can admire Joseph Lycett’s painting of New South Wales’ scenic Prospect Hill from the early 1800s. For more recent examples of Australian art, look no further than Gwyn Hanssen Pigott’s At the Gates—a set of glazed bowls, glasses and bottles.

Other highlights include Ralph Balson’s Construction, which was painted in 1941, and painter Grace Cossington Smith’s Trees, which dates back to 1927. You can also get in touch with your inner artist or expand your education by attending one of the gallery’s workshops or lectures.
