During the June-October ski season, travelers can buy one lift pass to get access to two separate ski areas on Mount Ruapehu. Beginners will want to head to Whakapapa, which sits on the volcano's northwestern flank. This resort has a dedicated slow-moving chairlift and a ski school, providing novices with the instruction they need to have a good time. Experts will have fun here as well, as there is a diverse array of groomed intermediate and advanced trails.

Ruapehu's southwestern side, meanwhile, is home to Turoa. Here, skiers can take advantage of the country's only lift-accessed glacial skiing area as well as a scenic 2.5-mile trail.
