Learn about early Chinese settlements at Chung Wah Temple

Due to Darwin’s location in Australia’s Northern Territory, you may notice a Chinese influence in parts of this city while on locum assignment in the area.

And to learn about China's relationship with the Land Down Under you can visit the Chung Wah Temple in Darwin. This attraction, which is also referred to as Darwin’s Temple, is accompanied by a museum that showcases the struggles Chinese immigrants faced when they made their way to the Northern Territory.

Both the temple and the museum are maintained by the Chung Wah Society, which is committed to preserving the culture, history and traditions of the early Chinese immigrants. Inside the museum, you can peruse displays, photographs, family trees and other glimpses into these individuals’ early settlements.

The temple has faced its own set of hardships since it was constructed in 1887. From multiple cyclones to bombings, the temple has been rebuilt several times.

Both the temple and the museum also play significant roles in cultural festivals and events, such as New Year and the Moon, or Mid-Autumn Festival.
