Locum 101: Electricity and outlets down under

Locum tenens: To use your favorite electronic devices when you move down under, put these guidelines on the electrical systems in Australia and New Zealand to good use.

Both of these countries use a standard plug that features three flat pins, the same general shape as the outlets found in China. Because of dimensional differences, however, Chinese power adapters may not fit in Australian outlets, so travelers should be sure to buy ones specifically designed for the country's power system.

Luckily, appropriately-sized adapters can be purchased in many different places. Larger electronics retailers in the U.S. may have these devices, but travelers are most likely to find them at stores in Australia itself.

Australia uses a 240-volt AC 50-hertz power supply. While this is similar to the European Union and many Asian countries, it's twice the level of the standard 120-volt system found in the U.S. American locum tenens should make sure that their appliances can handle this increased power load. Although most modern electronics are able to handle both 120- and 240-volt power, some older ones can be fried by the stronger charge.
