Locum 101: Preparing for Australia's seasons

Locum tenens who are heading to Australasia on assignment know they will encounter changes in weather, but it may take a little while to get used to the timing of the seasons. Doctors, get ready to celebrate Halloween when the tulips are blooming and Christmas at the onset of the summer.

In Australia, summer runs from December to February, Autumn extends from March to May, Winter occurs between June and August and Spring begins in September and ends in November. Christmas barbecues on the beach are a holiday tradition in Australia—one you will likely learn to love—and skiiers head for the hills in June.

Weather varies from region to region in Australia, too. The northern part of the country is known to have high temperatures and humidity, as well as wet and dry seasons. In the country's center, conditions may be on the dryer side. Down south, temperatures can range from hot to cold, with moderate rainfall.

As Australia is the driest inhabited continent, its citizens are more than familiar with droughts. These conditions also increase the chances of bush fires, which are a frequent occurrence in the country's bushland. Tropical storms known as cyclones may also come ashore between November and April and are the southern equivalent to the northern hemisphere's hurricanes.
