Maori culture in the heart of Gizzy

To get a full glimpse of life in New Zealand, take time to learn a bit about Maori culture. Fortunately, there are a number of different places you can visit that will give you an eye-opening look at the ancient customs of this culture when you take a medical job in New Zealand. One of the largest—and greatest—places to start is Gisborne's Te Poho o Rawiri Meeting House.

The carvings inside this establishment are prime examples of the meticulous detail these indigenous New Zealanders put into their artwork. One of the most famous is the tekoteko, which you'll find at the entrance of the house. The figure represents the ancestor Rawiri Te Eke Tu a Te Rangi, and its mere presence is intended as a challenge to anyone who attempts to enter the meeting house doors.

Although you can't take pictures inside the home, you can still build lasting memories of your trip to Gisborne. The city is situated on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand; a beautiful sunny region filled with heritage sites, wineries and gorgeous beaches perfect for relaxation after a day of adventure.
