Relax in Wellington's Frank Kitts Park

Locum tenens visiting the New Zealand capital of Wellington can kick back and relax in the urban oasis known as Frank Kitts Park.

When it was completed in the 1980s, this city retreat became one of the first parts of the Wellington waterfront to be developed. When the park was initially designed, city planners set it up with the town's annual street race in mind, making sure the green space was an ideal spot to watch the exciting event. While the last edition of the race was held more than a decade ago, Frank Kitts Park remains a welcome refuge from city life for Wellingtonians.

Today, visitors can enjoy a range of installations such as a children's playground and a large event venue. City officials also plan to build a Chinese garden here, drawing inspiration from the Wellington Chinese Garden Society.

One of the most popular features of Frank Kitts Park is the Water Whirler, a magnificent fountain designed by the late Kiwi sculptor and filmmaker Len Lye. While the fountain was not able to be made using the technology available at the time of Lye's death in 1980, modern capabilities allowed this kinetic installation to be created in 2006, giving visitors a chance to enjoy its choreographed jets and artistic patterns.
