Spend an artful afternoon in Auckland

An afternoon with no plans while on locum tenens assignment in Auckland can quickly shift into a day of cultural adventure when you discover the numerous art galleries dotting the streets of the city. Along Queen Street and Great North Road in the heart of downtown, you'll find renowned artist studios such as Michael Lett and Sue Crockford, where their enticing exhibits rotate throughout the year.

At the Sue Crockford Gallery, situated on the second floor of the Endeans Building facing the waterfront, visitors will view works from more than 25 highly regarded artists that have made their mark nationally and across the globe. Since 1985, the gallery and the artists it showcases have grown into one of Auckland's leading institutions of contemporary art.

Once you've seen the boundary-pushing displays at Sue Crockford, venture just a few minutes west to check out the works at Michael Lett. In business since 2003, the contemporary exhibition relocated from its ground-floor space on Karangahape Road to its new home in February 2011. Featuring artists such as Seraphine Pick and James Lynch, the gallery takes pride in portraying a diverse array of contemporary artists who use a variety of media to tell their personal artistic story.
