Spring in Tasmania: Where to go and what to do

Tasmania is a small island state with large extremes. This magnificent mass of land has white-sand beaches, tall alpine peaks, tree-blanketed cities, craggy black coastlines and untamed rivers all wrapped up in 26,410 square miles. And that's only a smattering of the epic scenery you'll experience here.

Are you planning to take a locum tenens assignment in Tasmania this spring? Here are three top sights to see and places to discover during this remarkable time of year. (Remember, Tassie is in the Southern Hemisphere so spring is just right around the corner.)

1) Discover Bruny Island

Bruny Island during spring is breathtaking. This island just shines differently. It's just a little cooler in temperature but not too cool. And the marine life is bustling. If you want to spot migrating whales, colonies of fur seals and large pods of dolphins, head to Adventure Bay.

2) Take a short road trip along Tassie's east coast

Go coastal for some great seafood, scenery and wine. Start in Swansea and work your way to Bicheno. Along the way you'll encounter all sorts of resplendent wineries: Milton Vineyard, Gala Estate, Spring Vale Wines, Devil's Corner and Freycinet Vineyard. Stop by any one of them; they're all welcoming. The real highlight of the trip though? Catching a sunrise at Freycinet National Park from one of the many dramatic cliffs or winding beaches.

3) Go rafting on the Franklin River

We've written about this one quite a bit. That should tell you that rafting the Franklin River is a worthwhile experience. However, we do know that whitewater rafting is a huge adrenaline rush and it's not for everyone. Still you should go witness this wild river's majesty if only while safely perched atop a rock along the shoreline.
