Top 3 wine regions to visit in Australia

According to an article on Australian Geographic back in 2013, “Australians produce over one billion litres of wine a year” and they export more than two-thirds of it. With that much wine being exported around the world you’ve probably tried a Shiraz or Pinot noir by now. If you haven’t and you happen to be on locum tenens assignment in Australia right now why not just go direct to the source? We’ve curated a quick list for you of the top three wine regions to visit in Australia.

Barossa Valley, South Australia

Subtle, rolling scenery will enchant almost every one of your senses in Barossa Valley except your gustatory perception (AKA your taste buds). Let the professional winemakers satiate that last sense with their old vine Shiraz. Visit Kaesler Wines in Nuriootpa (an hour’s drive northeast of Adelaide) for tastings as well as tours of their century-old acreage.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Yarra Valley has a long winemaking history stretching all the way back to 1838 when the very first vines were planted. In fact, Yarra Valley was the first wine growing region in Victoria. It went from a few vineyards in the 19th century to over 80 in present day. Head to Yering Station to explore where Victoria’s first vineyard was planted and even taste their famous Village Pinot noir.

Tamar Valley, Tasmania

The first vines planted in Yarra Valley, Victoria actually came from Tasmania, the oldest wine-producing region in Australia. This last wine region in Tasmania can be turned into one unforgettable journey. 32 vineyards make up Tamar Valley all within reasonable driving distance. You can make a road trip out of it and visit them all in a day or two. Maybe even stay overnight at one of the wineries.
