Towering views over Wanganui, New Zealand

Looking for an intense workout and incredible views in New Zealand? Try climbing Durie Tower, the 110-foot-high (33.5-m) structure that boasts a whopping 191 steps to its top platform. Built in 1919, the building offers views of the Tasman Sea, and mounts Ruapehu and Taranaki, all of which can make for stunning photos.

The historic site is situated in Wanganui, a city that is essentially built around the eponymous river. You'll feel like a champion once you've reached the summit of the mountainous tower. The long and winding staircase is a bit tight, so you'll get up close and personal with dozens of others who like to give themselves a challenge. Once you reach the top, the wind can be intense, so be sure to bring a lightweight jacket and hold onto your hat.

The Wanganui river city is a fun place to visit for a number of reasons. When you arrive, you'll find heritage museums, the historic opera house, gardens and art galleries lining each charming street. Be sure to visit all of the above while on your locum tenens assignment in the Land of the Long White Cloud.
