Explore New Zealand's Northland like never before

The old Highwic house in New Zealand was home to 21 of native Alfred Buckland's children. You can learn this lesser known fact about the Kiwi nation, along with other gems when you embark on the Northland Tour while on your locum assignment.

Hosted by the New Zealand Heritage Places Trust, the four-day journey uncovers the real stories of the first encounters between Maori and Europeans, as well as tales of missionaries, warriors and traders. A guide will direct visitors along a coach tour and provide unique commentary about each historic place they pass.

"Northland is blessed with a powerful combination of heritage, history and stunning geography—all of which makes exploring and learning about the richness of the region a special experience," stated Gordon Hewston, the NZHPT Northern Heritage destinations manager.

Highlights of the tour include a visit to the Kerikeri Mission Station, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the country's oldest working printery at Pompallier Mission and the site of the largest Treaty signing at Mangungu Mission in Hokianga.

The exploration will begin and end at Buckland's Gothic Highwic house, where visitors can explore the antiques within its interior and the lawns and fine gardens that surround the home. Anyone with a New Zealand locum tenens job can benefit from digging a bit deeper into the culture of their temporary home.
