See the largest mammals on Earth off the coast of New Zealand

Locums working in New Zealand have endless opportunities to see the natural world up close and personal. Yet while the scenic countryside of the island nation has much to offer nature-minded visitors, locums can also interact with the largest animals in the world just off the coast.

Despite only boasting 15,134 miles of coastline, New Zealand has earned a reputation as the marine mammal capital of the world, thanks to its rich beautiful seas that prove a popular environment for humpback and southern right whales. This activity can be enjoyed year-round, and there are a wealth of places to launch a whale watching tour on the North and South Islands.

One of the best places to see the massive creatures is on the Cook Strait, a narrow stretch of water that lies between the two islands. During a recent survey by the Department of Conservation, a remarkable 62 humpbacks had been recorded in the location within only three weeks of study.

Another popular launching point is the city of Akaroa, a south island locale with an eponymous strait that is a common playground for these gentle giants.
