Stroll through Amberley, New Zealand's heritage town

To find country hospitality on your New Zealand locum tenens assignment, you only have to travel as far as Amberley, where local farms thrive and wine growers cultivate sweet grapes. Mountain views surround you to the north and south, and the peaceful coastline of Amberley Beach is just a leisurely stroll down the road. Whether you wish to ride horseback, fish in the river, taste Kiwi wines or venture on garden tours, this quaint heritage town offers it all.

Situated in North Canterbury, the town is quiet, with a population of about 1,300. Along the old railway in the center of town resides the oldest buildings and landmarks in the city, where you can embark on your own history lesson by meandering along the 218-yard trail (200 m). The path is dotted with 21 historic stations, including the Amberley School house and The Catholic Church of the Most Holy Passion, a cob cottage composed of clay, sand, straw, water and earth.

Before taking a historic tour through town, make sure to catch the morning farmers' market, held every Saturday in rain or shine. Stallholders provide the freshest, locally sourced fruits and vegetables, seafood, artisan breads, gourmet coffee and olive oils to please the palate of any visitor.
